We are currently organising to have a polocrosse taster day where we will have a coach and equipment for the day with the aim of starting a polocrosse club and team(s). Fore those who dont know Polocrosse is a mix between polo and lacrosse played on horseback and players only have 1 horse or pony and to begin in the sport you do not need anything much more than a horse, protective boots for it's legs and a protective hat and a polocrosse stick and ball.

For those who want to come and see what's involved please simply contact us at this stage and register your interest so we can get an idea of numbers before we organise the taster day.

We support the strangles campaign

as an educational establishment we (Lanquestrian Ltd. incorporating Lunebank Riding Centre) are issuing the following equine bio-security guidelines for your information, please be a responsible owner - we will only achieve eradication through education, if everyone followed this advice then strangles could be wiped out, if a lot of us do then we will go a long way to helping wipe it out, so stop the stigma and take sensible action now before its too late for another (and possibly your) horse.

What is strangles:
Strangles is caused by the bacterium streptococcus equi. The signs of equine strangles include fever, marked “snotty” nasal discharge, loss of appetite and depression. Lymph node swelling and abscesses predominantly of the head and neck. It is passed by direct contact with strangles (horse with strangles touches another horse) and indirect contact(i.e. horse with strangles touches your jumper then your jumper brushes against another horse) , also it can be carried by equines known as “carriers” and these may never show the symptoms of strangles

In an ideal world… The only way to ensure you keep strangles out is to operate a closed yard and to have existing animals swabbed and any new animals swabbed and securely isolated (i.e. kept on their own and treated as if they have got something!) They must then all be swabbed clear 3 times by your vet (2 weeks apart) BEFORE they mix with other animals. You, your vet, your farrier and friends would also have to follow a strict hygiene routine should you personally visit another yard, show, event etc. before you touch your horse, it’s tack or your equipment (remember horses known as “carriers” of strangles usually look healthy so you cant tell by looking and it only takes one touch of one of these horses!)

However… The world is not ideal and operating a closed yard forever as above is not practical in most situations as you may wish to hack out in company (either expected OR unexpected), compete, go to riding club or Pony Club lessons and events, so instead of only becoming involved with strangles if you are unfortunate enough to have a horse either with it or stabled near yours, be responsible and tackle the problem before it gets to that, by following the pointers below…..this also takes a lot less energy than simply moaning and worrying about strangles!

The DO’S…
Do Have the vet swab your horses so you don’t unwittingly pass it around - EVERYONE CAN DO THIS!!! - remember somebody passed strangles on to the unlucky horses involved in the latest outbreak and it will likely have been a carrier that currently looks fit and well - if this is your horse then would you rather have your vet swab and possibly give a course of antibiotics or can you live with yourself knowing you may cause more unnecessary suffering to the next horse you meet at a show, out hacking, or your friends horses who you stroked on a quick visit to their yard?
Do Take your own buckets, feed and water to shows/outings and do not share them or items of tack/clothing etc.
Do Wash your hands before and after touching each and every horse
Do Ask the judges and officials at events not to touch your horse or pony if you are worried about diseases and infections being passed from horse to horse
Do Take a Hibiscrub (or similar) solution to wash your boots and tack etc. after a show/an event/visit to another yard
Do Wash clothing on your return from shows/events/other yards etc. before visiting another horse again

The DON’T’S…
Most Importantly DON’T Delay in calling the vet if strangles is suspected, especially as abscesses can swell up to hamper airways within hours
Don’t Go off the yard if your horse or others on your yard has got or have suspected strangles as this will only help to spread strangles, you need to isolate the yard, have all the horses/ponies swabbed by the vet and do not come out of isolation until you have been given the all clear by your vet.
Don’t Allow nose to nose contact between yours and other horses
And Definitely DON’T move to a “safe” yard once an outbreak has occurred as this spreads strangles even more - remember your horse could be a carrier (These look fit and well) and could you have this on your conscience?

This leaflet has been sponsored by Lunebank Riding Centre who, about 4 years ago, well before the move to Lanquestrian Ltd. were unfortunate enough to have a strangles outbreak at their old yard, they had all of the horses & ponies swabbed & vaccinated and now follow the above guidelines themselves aswell as having a bio security agenda in place at all events held at Lanquestrian Ltd. as they do not wish to be put in the same position again! So please be both honest and responsible and do not criticise those that dare to be!
